Your profile

For users: after your first sign-in, a short wizard at /onboarding walks you through the fields below and marks your profile onboarded once you finish. You can come back and change any of it later.

Field What it is
Handle Your profile’s URL slug, lowercase letters, digits, and dashes, 3 to 30 characters. Chosen once, editable later.
Headline One line, up to 120 characters.
Bio A short bio, up to 2000 characters, plain text. Blank lines split it into paragraphs.
Roles One or more of Founder, Operator, Investor, Idea person, Business owner.
Looking for One or more of Co-founder, Team, Investors, Talent, Advice, Ideas.
Skills Free-form tags, up to 30.
Affiliation Your school or company.
Program Your program or degree, for example MBA, MS CS, PhD ChemE, or Alumni.
Location City or region, free text.
Links LinkedIn, a website, GitHub, or anything else, each an http:// or https:// URL.
Visibility Public or members-only. See below.
Photo An optional profile photo, shown on your profile, in the directory, and next to your posts. Upload a file, paste a link to an image, or use your LinkedIn photo (see below). PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF up to 5 MB. It is cropped to a square and stored at 512 pixels, and the original file (including any location data in it) is never kept.

If your LinkedIn account is linked (Settings, the Connected accounts tab), a Use LinkedIn photo button next to it copies your current LinkedIn photo into the network as your profile photo. Signing up with LinkedIn, or linking it later, does this once automatically when you have no photo yet. A photo you uploaded yourself is never replaced without you asking. The copy is stored here, so it keeps working after LinkedIn’s own picture link expires. LinkedIn access lasts about sixty days, so if the button reports that access expired, link the account again and retry.

A pasted link works the same way for any image: the network fetches it once and keeps a copy, and the link itself is never shown to anyone. Links must be public https:// addresses.

Two settings, chosen on the wizard or from /settings:

  • Public. Anyone can find your profile, including someone who is not signed in.
  • Members-only. Your profile appears to every signed-in member of the network, in the directory and on your profile page, whether or not you share an organization. Someone who is not signed in cannot find you or open your profile page.

Change any field from /settings, under the Profile tab, or from a terminal:

Terminal window
vn profile show
vn profile edit --headline "Building a marketplace for lab equipment" --roles founder, operator
vn profile avatar ./me.jpg
vn profile avatar --url https://example.com/me.png
vn profile avatar --from-linkedin
vn profile avatar --remove

vn profile edit takes one flag per field (--handle, --headline, --bio, --roles, --skills, --looking-for, --affiliation, --program, --location, --visibility, and --link name=url, repeatable for more than one link). Pass at least one flag. Every command accepts --json. See vn profile for the full flag reference.

A public profile lives at https://venturenetwork.ai/u/<handle>. A members-only profile answers there too, but only for a viewer who is signed in.
